Over 270 species of vertebrate animals are known to occur on the Preserve. This includes 14 species of amphibians, 25 species of reptiles, 174 species of birds, and 57 species of mammals. Over 45 of these species are considered rare, imperiled, or otherwise at-risk by the California Natural Diversity Database, California Department of Fish and Game, or the US Fish & Wildlife Service including the California Tiger salamander, Santa Lucia cougar with_buddySlender salamander, California Red-legged frog, Tri-colored blackbird, Purple martin, Coast Horned lizard, and the South-Central California Coast steelhead. Over 54 species of butterflies occur on the Preserve, including the Endangered Smiths blue butterfly.
