The Santa Lucia Conservancy environmental education program provides free, high-quality environmental education in the natural areas of the Santa Lucia Preserve. Over 16,000 attendees have participated in the Conservancy's education program since 1999. We offer educational activities through our public programs and our school programs.
The Conservancy's education programs are attended annually by as many as 3000 participants from the local community. We offer a wide range of fun and educational experiences to children of all ages, and from all types of schools (public, private, charter and home) with a focus on Pre-K through Fifth grade (we welcome all upper grades as well). We also welcome other groups of children and adults. Classes are offered at our education facilities along Potrero Creek and at our Outdoor Classroom at our office near the Carmel River, with an occasional foray to other areas of the Preserve.
We offer unique curriculum units in multiple subjects, all of which are age appropriate, supportive of school and state curriculum standards and highly interactive. These include: seasonal changes in the landscape, introduction to birds, cavity nesting birds, owls in the redwoods, mammals, butterflies, reptiles and amphibians, ladybugs, redwoods, nature art and poetry and history with a focus on native American use of plants.
Our goal, and success, is in providing children with place-based education, linking them to the natural world in their backyard. Many teachers consider our classes an integral part of their curriculum, and children who return year after year for different classes tell us it is "my favorite field trip".
We also welcome non-school groups such as scouts and adults for educational nature walks on the beautiful trails of the Preserve. We readily adapt our curriculum to suit the interests and needs of each group.
A 10-minute drive into the Preserve, the Potrero Creek location is a beautiful redwood-riparian canyon with a high diversity of living things, perfect for most of our classes.
Our outdoor classroom along the Carmel River is an ideal site for some of our most interactive classes, particularly our mammals, introduction to birds and cavity nesting bird classes.
