Habitat Restoration

Santa Lucia Conservancy is committed to strategic stewardship actions that result in the restoration of degraded natural habitats on the Santa Lucia Preserve. Development of effective habitat restoration projects requires knowledge of what was there before and a vision of the desired future condition. Effective implementation typically occurs at the landscape scale and requires substantial funding, long term commitment, and a great deal of ongoing research and innovation, since the science is relatively recent and few “how to” manuals exist to guide ones efforts.

Among the habitat restoration efforts currently underway by Santa Lucia Conservancy on the Santa Lucia Preserve are:

  • 50 acre Blue oak – Valley oak woodland restoration (Partners include Rana Creek)
  • 400 cubic yard erosion gully restoration (Partners include Natural Resource Conservation Service and County of Monterey RSCP)

Conservation Programs

Santa Lucia Conservancy’s conservation programs are broadly defined by four categories: natural resource monitoring, natural resource management, habitat restoration, and scientific research. Each category encompasses tasks that are essential to accomplish its mission to conserve and sustain the Santa Lucia Preserve and to fulfill goals and objectives related to ensuring biological conservation and sustainability, based on sound science.
