Natural Resource Management

Santa Lucia Preserve, like most large landscapes in California, is constantly changing. Many of these changes are natural, expected and desirable. In such cases the Santa Lucia Conservancy’s goal is to support the conditions and processes upon which these changes depend.

Other types of change are detrimental to the diversity and health of the ecosystem. These changes may be attributable to past or current land use practices both on and adjacent to the Preserve or growing impacts from the introduction of non-native plants and wildlife. Under these circumstances the Conservancy prioritizes the threats and develops action plans to contain or eliminate the factors contributing to these types of changes.

Some current natural resource management efforts underway on the Santa Lucia Preserve include:

  • Habitat-based fuel management
  • Invasive plant mapping and control
  • Cattle grazing as a conservation tool
  • Native plant nursery
  • Storm Water Pollution Prevention Program
  • Resource management consultation with landowner partners

Conservation Programs

Santa Lucia Conservancy’s conservation programs are broadly defined by four categories: natural resource monitoring, natural resource management, habitat restoration, and scientific research. Each category encompasses tasks that are essential to accomplish its mission to conserve and sustain the Santa Lucia Preserve and to fulfill goals and objectives related to ensuring biological conservation and sustainability, based on sound science.
