SANTA LUCIA CONSERVANCY Santa Lucia Conservancy was incorporated in 1995 to ensure the presence of a strong, stable, independent resource protection organization, in perpetuity, for the Santa Lucia Preserve. Its mission to conserve and sustain the unique Central Coast landscape, and its mandate to preserve and protect the species and sensitive resources, is accomplished through Conservation Programs and Education Programs, which inform residents and the community-at-large about the unique biodiversity of the Preserve and the surrounding region.
SANTA LUCIA PRESERVE™ In March of 1993, the Monterey County Board of Supervisors adopted Resolution No. 93-115, which approved the Rancho San Carlos Partnership's proposal to plan and develop a community within a preserve. In recognition of the unique natural and scenic resources of the former "Rancho San Carlos" property, the resolution stipulated that at least 14,467 acres be retained and managed as open space. The Santa Lucia Preserve community concept, outlined in the Comprehensive Development Plan and Combined Development Permit Application submitted by the Rancho San Carlos Partnership (PC 94-067), defined new terms and guiding principles for the project. Extensive reporting and mapping of existing resources and future plans for their management and protection, including the creation of the Conservancy, were incorporated in the Plan. The "Preserve Lands" (18,000 acres) are the portion of the 20,000-acre Santa Lucia Preserve that will be left undeveloped. They are comprised of two categories: Wildlands (10,362 acres) are dedicated open space, owned and managed by Santa Lucia Conservancy; Openlands are privately-owned by residents but remain in conservation as open space, subject to conservation easements held by the Conservancy.
